Why You Should Be Taking Epsom Salt Baths

Our understanding of the human body has vastly grown over the last few decades. This has allowed us to improve our training capabilities for not only sport, but general fitness, overall health, and of course vanity. But with this increased understanding and ability comes the compounding ways we are placing stress on our bodies, both inside and out. With training trends and fitness genre fusions here to stay, it is nice to be able to rely on a recovery method that not only comes from the natural minerals of the earth, but is proven to be beneficial in many areas. 

Epsom Salt has become very popular– although not too many people are familiar with what exactly it is, how it’s used, or the benefits it can provide for the body. But after taking a closer look, it’s easy to see why it is being utilized on a regular basis by some of the world’s most prominent athletes and high performers, such as the Golden State Warriors’ All-Star, Stephen Curry

So what exactly is it? Epsom salt earned its name from one of the earliest discoveries of magnesium sulfate, which took place in Epsom, England. Epsom salt is not actually salt, but a naturally-occurring mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate, both essential compounds that keep our bodies functioning regularly. 

Soaking in Epsom Salt has the following benefits:

  • Eases stress and relaxes the body

  • Eliminates toxins from the body

  • Relieves pain and muscle cramps

  • Helps prevent hardening of arteries and blood clots

Its counterpart, Sulfate, serves as a catalyst in the formation of brain tissue and joint proteins, improving the absorption of nutrients, and strengthening the walls of the digestive tract. Both magnesium and sulfate are readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom Salt baths an easy and relaxing way to enjoy the related health benefits. 

Creating your own Epsom Salt bath is easy and rewarding. Simply draw yourself a bath as you normally would, then add in the Epsom Salt while warm water is running in order to help it dissolve. For your standard-sized tub, use the amount suggested on the package (1-2 cups is ideal). Some doctors even recommend soaking up to three times per week, for about 12-15 minutes each session. Epsom Salt can be found on the shelves at your local grocery store, health food store, or pharmacy. 

No matter how much stress you place on your body during the day, your recovery process is just as important (some argue more) as the physical training itself. Working an Epsom Salt bath into your weekly routine is a safe, easy, and effective way to enhance your recovery and your overall health. Now go relax and work on your health while doing so!
